Original Medicare Plus a Supplement

Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) works with Original Medicare to pay for some of the out-of pocket cost that Part A & B alone does not. This can also include co-payments, coinsurance and deductibles in most cases. Some Medigap policies also cover services that Original medicare does not cover, like medical care when you travel outside the U.S.

Things to know about Medigap policies

• Medicare will pay its share of the Medicare- Approved Amount of covered health care cost
• Then your Medigap insurance company pays its chare
• You must have Medicare A & B
• Any standardized Medigap policy is guaranteed renewable even it you have health problems. This means the insurance company can not cancel you Medigap policy as long as you pay the premium.
• Its illegal for anyone to sell you a Medigap policy if you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, unless you're switching back to Original Medicare

"Standardized" Supplement plans

Every Medicare supplement plan must follow specific Federal and state laws that are designed to protect you. For this reason, in most states an insurance company can only sell you a "standardized" supplement plan identified by the letters A through N. And no matter what insurance company sells it, all Medicare supplement plans are required to offer the same core benefits.
